Frequently Asked Questions

Do Bob's Red Mill Brown Lentils need to be soaked before cooking?
No, Bob's Red Mill Brown Lentils do not need to be soaked before cooking, unlike many other legumes. Simply rinse them in cold water, remove any debris, and cook directly. Brown lentils cook in about 20–30 minutes on the stovetop and do not require pre-soaking, making them one of the most convenient plant protein options.

How much protein do brown lentils contain?
Bob's Red Mill Brown Lentils are an excellent source of plant-based protein, providing approximately 13 grams of protein per 1/4 cup dry serving, along with around 11 grams of dietary fiber. They are also a good source of iron, folate, and complex carbohydrates, making them a nutritional powerhouse for plant-based and omnivore diets alike.

What is the best way to cook Bob's Red Mill Brown Lentils?
Rinse 1 cup of brown lentils and combine with 2 1/2 cups of water or broth in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20–30 minutes until tender. Avoid salting until the end of cooking — salt can toughen the lentil skins if added too early. Use in soups, stews, salads, grain bowls, or as a meat substitute in sauces.

Are Bob's Red Mill Brown Lentils gluten free?
Bob's Red Mill Brown Lentils are naturally gluten free as a legume. However, they are processed in facilities that also handle gluten-containing grains, so they are not certified gluten free. Individuals with celiac disease should check current packaging for allergen and processing information before consuming.

Reliably clean and pickee-over lentils

I have been buying brown lentils from Bob's Red Mill for years. It is very clean and well picked over. You do not have to worry about rocks hiding in your lentils (though you should always double check while rinsing the lentils!).

Best brown lentils

Best lentils I’ve found. Good flavor and hold form nicely after cooked (doesn’t get mushy unless really overcooked). Only thing is it calls for way too much water leaving you with lentil soup when you use 4 cups water per cup of lentils. The right amount of water is somewhere in the range of 2-3 cups per cup of lentils, but I’m still experimenting. Organic version would be nice.
