Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats safe for celiac disease?
Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats are made using a purity protocol process — starting from oat seeds tested to be free of gluten contamination from field to package. They are processed in a dedicated gluten-free facility and tested to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, meeting the FDA standard for gluten-free labeling.

How are gluten free steel cut oats different from regular steel cut oats?
The oats themselves are botanically gluten free, but regular oats are typically cross-contaminated with wheat, barley, or rye during growing, harvesting, or processing. Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats use purity protocol oats — grown in dedicated fields and milled in a certified gluten-free facility — to eliminate cross-contact risk.

How do I cook Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats?
Bring 4 cups of water or milk to a boil. Add 1 cup of Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer uncovered for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For faster preparation, soak the oats overnight and reduce cooking time to about 10 minutes. Serve with your choice of toppings.

Can I use gluten free steel cut oats in recipes beyond oatmeal?
Yes. Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats can be used in granola, grain bowls, stuffed peppers, and even savory dishes. They hold their texture well after cooking, making them suitable as a rice alternative in some applications. They can also be pulsed in a food processor to create a coarser gluten-free oat flour.

The easy way to order a difficult-to-find-product

If you've never tried steel cut oats, they taste a bit different than regular oats. But they are more filling. We have a 7-minute pressure-cooked recipe that makes for a quick and easy hot breakfast. Sometimes gluten-free steel cut oats are hard to find; these are always dependable.

Didn't have to give up my oatmeal when trying to go gluten free!

Tried going gluten free for 3 months to see whether my intestinal issues were related to gluten. Because I love to eat my oatmeal every morning - with blueberries, walnuts, etc. - thought I would try these as part of going gluten free. Didn't have to give up oatmeal! But, attempting to go gluten free didn't make any changes to my intestinal symptoms, so back to the doctor.Even so, I assume these oats are as advertised. The only reason I wouldn't order them again is that they are about twice the price of the regular ones. But I ate them all.

I love steel cut oats. But beware of overcooking in a slow cooker.

After about 8 hours on low in my slow cooker, the oats had lost the al dente texture I love. They were on the verge of becoming a gelatinous goo. The package said to use 3 cups water to 1 cup oats on the stovetop but 4:1 in a slow cooker. This seemed backward to me, so I started out with 6 cups of water and 2 cups of oats. Later, I added one more cup of hot water. Maybe that was a mistake. I stirred the slow cooker every couple of hours. But the result was one I did not feel proud to take to my potluck breakfast event. So I bought a fruit tray from the local grocery store instead. From here on out, I will cook them on the stove so I can tell when they’re done.

Much tastier than other oatmeal!

I cook these in our Zojirushi rice cooker, which has a "porridge" setting. The steel cut oats are delicious, with rich creamy flavor and a nice springy bite. It's hat springy bite that's so different from other oatmeals. You'll enjoy these.(If you have a Zojirushi rice cooker, try the "porridge" setting... but be patient as that is not a FAST way to get these steel cut oats ready. It takes about 40 minutes, maybe 45. The timer will show a longer time than that when you start the cycle, but it adjusts and re-thinks and gets it done a little quicker than its first guess. You can cook 'em much faster on a stovetop, of course, but I let the Japanese engineers at Zojirushi and their cooker's software handle the whole process and the oats are cooked to perfection.)

I recently learned that steel cut oats are so much better for you than other oats. They take a little longer to cook, but there are so many delicious recipes and it is totally worth the extra time. Try it in the instant pot and enjoy the health benefits of a more whole food!
